2015 welding rodeo
Team event # 1: making the cut (need to be done by all participant)
Time: 30 minutes
Material: 5/32” flat bar
Process: Oxy-fuel cutting
Tools: Files, grinders, magnets, soapstone and punch
Goal: Cut shapes and bevels in provide plate
Instructions:
1) Trace the three assigned shape on the supplied material with soapstone and punch.
2) Cut the shapes using oxy-fuel cutting process
3) On one end of the flat bar cut a 30 degree bevel
Team event #2-3: Welded Coupons
Time: 30 minutes
Material: 5 X coupons
Process 1: SMAW Position: 1 F, 2F, 3F
Process 2: GMAW Position: 1 F, 2F, 3F
Tools: Files, grinders, magnets
Rules
One member of your team cannot do all the welds. The most any one member can complete is 2 out of the 6 welds. This is a friendly competition where teamwork plays a big part in success.
Instructions:
1) One side is to be welded with 7018 electrodes. Complete one fillet weld in each of the flat, horizontal and vertical positions.
2) The opposite side is to be welded with solid wire (S3 or S6). Complete one fillet in each of the flat, horizontal and vertical positions.
Team event # 4: Saddle up boy
Time: 30 minutes
Material: 2” pipe sched 40
Process 1: Coping pipe, oxyfuel cutting, SMAW welding
Tools: Files, grinders, magnets
Goal: Cut one end of the pipe, with a saddle cut, to fit onto the other pipe, on center, with a 90 degree angle. The quality of the cut will dictate how easy the pipe is to weld. Use the template provided to cut the pipe to fit.
Once the pipe is tacked together, place the pipe horizontally (5G) and weld around the pipe in position. The pipe will be welded all around in the overhead, vertical and flat position, using either 3/32” or 1/8” E48018 electrodes.
The pipe will be filled with water to check for leaks. The welds will be graded on appearance, proper welding position and lack of defects.
Team event # 5: The 2” X 2” dice
Time: 30 minutes
Material: Various flat bar, files, grinders, magnets
Process: GMAW or SMAW
Tools: Files, grinders, magnets
Goal: To weld pieces of flat bar together to build a perfect 2” X 2” dice.
Instruction:
1) From the metal bin pick the necessary material to build a dice. (cube)
2) Weld the pieces together in the shape of a dice using the process of your choice. (Don’t forget some prep might be required)
3) Don’t forget the dice has to be square meaning that all the faces have to be of the same measurement.
4) Drill holes appropriately to have the dice look.
Team event # 6: The simulator(need to be done by all participant)
