The welding rodeo is a skills competition which showcases students’ technical and leadership skills. Students in teams of four participate in timed challenges designed to test skills required in order to be competitive in technology and trade occupations. The rodeo is a highly regarded event in which Career and Technology Studies (CTS) students in the Fabrication strand demonstrate their competencies in design, layout, material breakout and preparation, fit up and welding.
The philosophy of the competition is to expand students’ interests in welding and fabrication through positive experiences in an exciting environment, to reward students for excellence in individual and team events, directly involve industry with local welding programs and in evaluating student performance, and to showcase other aspects of the welding industry. The competition allows students to access the newest technologies and share their skills with industry experts that will serve as judges.
The first competition was held at Bishop Grandin in 2014. There were many events in that rodeo and St-Mary's came out on top. In 2015, six high schools participated in the rodeo. Bishop Grandin HS was the winner of the competition. In 2016 the event expanded to include High Schools from both the Calgary Separate School District and the Calgary Board of Education. As a result 9 High Schools competed in a friendly, yet competitive, environment at the Career and Technology Centre. It was the 4th annual Welding Rodeo event and the biggest to date! The team from the Career and Technology Centre won the event.
Last year the Calgary Welding Rodeo became The Calgary Regional Welding Rodeo as we welcomed 11 teams team in the competition. This year we are looking to expand again, hoping to include teams from outside Calgary, and invitations have been extended to schools in Okotoks and Airdrie. This year's event will be held at the the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Lodge 146 (11055-48th Street SE).
